Sonic Mass

An audio group exhibition that is one of the tangible outcomes from our explorations in the listening and sounding workshop convened by Sophia Bauer. The artists transform munyu. into a space where different sounds and narratives can come together, speak for themselves, be in conversation with each other, intermingle with and interrupt each other. Like in a rainforest where every presence sounds within their own rhythm, these artworks have their own agenda, their own theme, their own aesthetics, their own narrative and their own cycle but come together and sound together.

Pararira is a Swahili Sheng word that refers to the loud air horns often used on matatus. Some multi-horn systems are able to play pre-programmed patterns by way of a circuit board and an array of switches. The Pararira presented here bypasses the circuit board and allows the viewer to trigger each horn individually and compose their own melody. We are bombarded by these horn sounds when traversing Nairobi's cityscape; I wonder what it might mean to reclaim agency by not only producing these sounds, but also composing our own sonic patterns with them. The Pararira Installation sounded during the Sonic Mass exhibition @munyu_space from the 4th of October to the 31st of October.
